Natural accumulations of bone showing no evidence for anthropogenic activity are scarce in cave sites in southwest Asia, as most sites dating from the Middle Palaeolithic to the beginning of the Epi-Palaeolithic show evidence for the alternating presence of humans and carnivores in the formation of bone assemblages. It is thus extremely difficult for the analyst to disentangle the contributions of the two.
