For three of the major contact markets between Flanders and Artois (Saint- Omer, Lille and Douai) one knows the rates of taxes levied on sold or exported grain and the amounts of farming rights. This grain consisted nearly exclusively of wheat and the farmers' margin must have amounted to about 50 % of the unprocessed product. This allows us to appraise the volumes of goods traded, which were enormous. As a matter of fact one can gather that by 1400 the silty High Lands exported towards Flanders, Zeeland, Holland and occasionally England something like 1,500,000 hi of wheat, not counting what came from the Santerre and Vermandois, that is 100, 200, 300 or 500 times more than the amounts exported towards the Lower Countries by the Baltic, Ab...
