The Rhetorical Manipulation of History in Cicero’s Philippics. Rhetorical manipulation of history is an indelible feature of Cicero’s oratorical works ; however in much of the Philippics it is more frequent and presents distinctive features when compared to his previous speeches. Cicero regards history as a collection of exempla or counter examples, which is not particularly original ; but what is distinctive is the scope of his work, which covers the past and includes recent events at Rome.
