Discours vrais ou inventés ? Le cas d’ Appien

True Speeches or False Speeches? The Appian Case Study. The present article is about the function of political speeches in ancient historiography and about their fidelity to what “was actually said”. The former section of the work is an introduction to the problem with reference to the modern debate. The latter section focuses on a case-study, such as Appian’ s Civil Wars. In conclusion: Appian starts from speeches really delivered, taking the historical material from sources of very good quality, to finally obtain an historical framework which is able to show his readers his political vision of the History of Roman Empire.Le sujet de l’article porte sur la fonction et la réélaboration des discours politiques dans l’historiographie antique. Dans une première partie, les enjeux de la problématique sont mis en évidence. Dans une seconde partie est présenté un cas ponctuel, à savoir celui de l’histoire des Guerres Civiles d’Appien d’Alexandrie. En conclusion : Appien part des données réelles de discours effectivement prononcés ; il les réélabore en suivant à chaque fois une démarche différente, mais qui est conditionnée par la vision d’ensemble qu’il se propose de faire partager au lecteur.Carsana Chiara.
