The Use of History in the Political Speeches of Xenophon, from Marathon to Plataea. Rhetoric influences Xenophon’s political speech writing, especially in the way he makes use of Greek history. In Memorabilia III, 5, 10, for instance, Socrates calls attention to the inspirational value of past great deeds. This study of the political speeches in the Anabasis and the Hellenica, seeks to test the above assertion. Likewise, Xenophon uses the history of the Persian Wars to serve different objectives relating to the context of the particular speech at hand. For example, in the Anabasis, Xenophon’s mention of the battle of Marathon serves essentially to associate Greek victories with the founding sacrificial rite to Artemis Agrotera. In the Helle...
