A town born out of the Roman administrative organisation of Gaul, Corseul was the capital of the civitas of the Coriosolites throughout the early imperial period. From the late Empire onwards, the town suffered a clear decline, as is revealed by its spatial contraction, but this perhaps did not prevent it from retaining its role in the municipal organisation of the city -territory. This decline appears to have continued during the sixth century, during which Breton communities were installed in this area. The ancient settlement seems at this time to have no longer had the necessary resources to survive ; it was then abandoned, which involved the ruralisation of the urban area of the early imperial period.Ville née de l'organisation de la Ga...
