Among the letters written by Avitus of Vienna (bishop before 494, died February 518), approximately one hundred have survived, all of them written after 500 AD. In contrast with the correspondence from contemporary Gallic letter-writers, these letters clearly reflect the image of a world which was politically and religiously divided. Being addressed to high rank correspondents in all the western kingdoms as well as in the eastern empire, these letters were mainly seen by the Bishop of Vienna as a way either of collecting information for the benefit of the Church, or of using it to influence as much as possible, through directives, counsel or prayers, the course of events which he often thought disastrous.
