Les ordinations sacerdotales dans le diocèse de Cambrai au XVIIIe siècle (1727-1788)

The Cambrai diocese offered in the xvinth century a rate of recruiting to the ecclesiastical function approaching 3 clergymen for any thousand inhabitants over periods of 25 years, that is largely over the French average (between one and two per thousand). This widespread sacerdotal vocation can be accounted for by, all at once, a strong demographic growth, a high degree of literacy, the system of secondary education, the efficiency of the diocesan seminary, the benefits system and, more largely, the impact of Counter- Reformation in the Netherlands. Moreover, Cambrai did not experience the vocational crisis observed anywhere else after 1760 ; only a slight decline can be noticed here. In the same manner, it does not look as though there had been any real decline among the regular clergy. This inquiry bases itself on the bishops' records of ordinations and ecclesiastical insinuations.Le diocèse de Cambrai présentait au XVIIIe siècle un taux de recrutement à la fonction ecclésiastique voisin de 3 clercs pour 1 000 habitants, par période de 25 ans, soit un taux largement supérieur à la moyenne française (entre 1 et 2 pour 1 000). Cette importante vocation sacerdotale s'explique, tout à la fois, par la croissance démographique, le degré élevé d'alphabétisation, le système d'éducation secondaire, le bon fonctionnement du séminaire diocésain, le système bénéficiai, et, plus largement, par l'impact et la Contre-Réforme aux Pays-Bas. Cambrai, en outre, n'a pas connu la crise des vocations, observable ailleurs, après 1760 ; à peine un certain fléchissement peut-il se constater. De même, il ne semble pas qu'il y ait eu de réel déclin des réguliers. L'enquête se fonde sur des registres épiscopaux d'ordinations et d'insinuations ecclésiastiques.Men kan het aantal roepingen in het bisdom Kamerrijk in de xvnie eeuw, per période van 25 jaar, op 3 per duizend inwoners tellen, wat aanzienlijk hoger ligt dan het Franse gemiddelde (tussen 1 en 2 per duizend). De verklaring voor dit hoge aantal roepingen ligt in een reeks factoren : de demografi- sche groei, de hoge graad van de alfabetisering, het systeem van het secundair onderwijs, het goed functioneren van het bisschoppelijk seminarie, het prebendesysteem, en in rui- mere zin de impact van de Contra Reformatie in de Nederlanden. Kamerrijk heeft ook geen crisis in de roepingen die men overal kan vaststellen gekend, men kan ten hoogste een lichte daling vaststellen na 1760. En zo blijkt er ook geen echte achteruitgang van de regulieren te zijn geweest.
