William Faulkner : à vue de nez

Although W. Faulkner's work encompasses the whole range of sensory impressions, only such intellectualized, socialized and civilized senses as sight and hearing have so far been thoroughly explored. However, the unquestionable predominance of vision and voice in interpersonal communication or literary creation should not minimize the importance of more primitive and carnal senses like touch or smell in an author who has rightly or wrongly been labelled « the first great novelist of the unconscious ». Smell has seldom been taken into account and this paper aims at remedying this oversight and brings to light the hidden significance in Faulkner's fiction of olfactory impressions in childhood, sex or the uncouscious...Alors que l'œuvre de W. Faulkner couvre tout le champ des sensations, seules la vue et l'ouïe, sens intellectualisés, socialisés et civilisés, ont jusqu'à présent fait l'objet d'études approfondies. Or, la prédominance indéniable du regard et de la voix dans la communication entre les individus ou la création littéraire ne doit pas masquer l'importance, chez un auteur dont on a fait « le premier grand romancier de l'inconscient », de sens plus primitifs et plus charnels tels le toucher ou l'odorat. Ce dernier a rarement été pris en considération et le présent article vise à combler cette lacune en mettant en évidence les enjeux secrets de l'olfactif chez Faulkner : enfance, sexualité, inconscient...Carmignani Paul.
