The challenge of distance teaching: experiences among early years teachers during the Covid-19 pandemic

The goal of this article is to discuss aspects that show how the teaching process was adopted by early years teachers in primary education in the countryside of the state of Sergipe, during the social distancing period imposed by the pandemic in 2020. We used a qualitative approach for this research and the data, which were collected through semi-structured interviews, via telephone, were analyzed using textual discourse analysis. The results reveal that the teaching practices that occurred during the pandemic were limited to the type of internet access the children’s parents had and, because of this, printed activities were provided by the school for families to pick up biweekly. The explanations for the printed activities were complemented by explanatory audio and brief video recordings for the class, created for the group in WhatsApp. Moreover, support was provided through telephone and video calls made by the mothers. The rapport between the family and the teachers was meager and it was not possible to determine whether learning actually took place.Este artigo tem como propósito trazer para discussão aspectos que mostram como ocorreu o processo de ensino adotado por docentes dos anos iniciais do Ensino Fundamental de escolas do interior do Estado de Sergipe, durante o período de afastamento social imposto pela pandemia no ano de 2020. A pesquisa teve abordagem qualitativa, com os dados coletados por meio de uma entrevista semiestruturada, via telefone, submetidos ao processo de análise textual discursiva. Os resultados revelam que a ação docente desenvolvida durante esse período esteve limitada ao tipo de acesso à internet dos pais das crianças e que, por conta disso, quinzenalmente, foram disponibilizadas atividades impressas na escola para que as famílias as fossem buscar. As explicações relativas às atividades impressas eram complementadas por meio do envio de áudios e pequenos vídeos explicativos nos grupos das turmas, criados no WhatsApp, e ainda pelo atendimento às chamadas telefônicas, via vídeo, feitas pelas mães. O entrosamento da família com as professoras foi exíguo e não foi possível perceber se de fato ocorreu aprendizado.São Cristóvã
