Sex vs. Text : from Miller to Nabokov

This Must Not Be Put in a Book : Erotic Strategies in Gertrude Stein's Writing. Both to cope with the problem of actual censorship and to satisfy the demands of her own « almost puritanic » reticence about the subject of sex, Gertrude Stein developed over the years a variety of strategies, first based on concealment, then on transfiguration, intended to defuse the sense of prohibition connected with some of the topics she wanted to tackle. This essay attempts to break down the mechanisms involved in the various stages of a process that leads from a defensive and approach in her early fiction to an unqualified celebration of sexual delight in her erotic poetry.Sexe contre texte : de Miller à Nabokov. La représentation du sexe a toujours constitué un problème critique dans le roman américain. Quand le romancier n'adopte pas une approche nettement oblique pu poétique, tels Hawthorne ou James, il choisit soit de surdécrire les scènes erotiques, comme Henry Miller, et d'en dégager une transcendance, soit de les traiter sur un mode hilarant, tels Coover ou Roth. Le seul romancier contemporain à avoir adopté une attitude poétique et sans complexes à l'égard du sexe est Nabokov.
