L'élection de sépulture d'après les testaments douaisiens (1295-1500)

The choice of a burial place is more than a mere return to earth and reflects a whole psychological and social context. The burying inside the church building is searched with a strong insistance by the wealthiest groups of the city. It is in the church that the notabilities signal their passing down here whereas the earth of the cemeteries receives only the modest remains bound to a quick oblivion. In order to attract the gifts of the rich donators, parish churches and covent churches compete severely but the parish receives the majority of the votes, mostly among males. Men and women have diverging attitudes though they tend to become more unified in the xivth and xvth centuries. If in a first period men give their preference to a patri-local burial place, women have a different attitude and prefer rejoining their spouse. But progressively, the lineage links get weaker to the benefit of the conjugal unit. In the second half of the xvth century the choice of a burial place has become a matter of couple.L'élection de sépulture est plus qu'un simple retour à la terre et reflète tout un contexte, psychologique et social. L'inhumation dans l'église est recherchée avec insistance par les groupes fortunés de la ville ; c'est dans l'église que les notables signent leur passage ici-bas tandis que la terre des cimetières ne reçoit que les modestes dépouilles vouées à un rapide anonymat. Pour recevoir les offrandes des riches donateurs, églises paroissiales et églises conventuelles se livrent une rude concurrence mais la paroisse reçoit la majorité des suffrages, surtout masculins. Hommes et femmes ont des attitudes divergentes mais qui tendent à s'unifier du XIVe au XVe siècle. Si dans un premier temps les hommes accordent leur préférence à la sépulture patri-locale, il n'en est pas de même des femmes qui préfèrent rejoindre leur conjoint. Mais progressivement, les solidarités lignagères s'effacent au profit de la cellule conjugale. Dans la seconde moitié du XVe siècle l'élection de sépulture est devenue un choix de couple.De keuze van de begraafplaats is meer dan een eenvoudige terugkeer naar het land van herkomst en moet geplaats worden in een sociale en psychologische context. De rijken proberen nadrukkelijk in de kerk zelf begraven te worden, waar het kerkhof bestemd blijft voor de meer eenvoudige lijken die snel in de anonimiteit vergaan. Om de giften van rijke donatoren te krijgen leveren de parochie- en kloosterkerken een heftige strijd, maar de parochie haalt gewoonlijk de bovenhand, tenminste voor de mannen. Mannen en vrouwen hebben niet dezelfde houding in deze zaak maar dat veran- dert in de loop van de XIVe en XVe eeuw. In het begin geven de mannen de voorkeur aan de begraafplaats van de voorvaders, waar de vrouwen het graf van hun echtgenoot delen. Stilaan krijgt het gezinsgraf de voorkeur.
