Le bilinguisme gréco-latin dans les communautés juives d’Italie d’après les inscriptions (IIIe-VIe s.)

This study examines the linguistic relationships in the Italian Jewish communities from the third to the sixth century AD. The Jewish inscriptions from the Roman catacombs and those from Venusia, on the borders of Apulia and Lucania, are relevant to a socio‑linguistic study of the Jewish communities. According to Noy, the corpus of Jewish inscriptions from Rome totals c. 584, of which 74 per cent are Greek, 17 per cent Latin, and 6 per cent Greek and Latin. The distribution of Greek and Latin inscriptions in Rome seems to indicate that Greek remained the main language of the Jewish community at least until the third century AD. A close study of the linguistic features shows influences of Latin upon Greek and of Greek upon Latin. However the influence of Greek seems to be the more marked. The bilingualism of the Jews of Rome was real, but imperfect. The situation in the Jewish speech community from Venusia is quite different. There the Jewish community switched from Greek to Latin in about two centuries. Greek was maintained artificially in a fully Latin-speaking environment.Cette étude examine les relations linguistiques dans les communautés juives d’Italie entre le IIIe et le VIe s. ap. J.-C. Les inscriptions juives provenant des catacombes romaines et celles de Venosa, à la frontière entre l’Apulie et la Lucanie, sont intéressantes pour mener une étude sociolinguistique dans les communautés juives. Selon Noy, le corpus des inscriptions juives de Rome compte 584 textes, dont 74 pour cent sont en grec, 17 en latin et 6 en grec et en latin. La répartition des inscriptions grecques et latines de Rome semble indiquer que le grec fut la langue la plus importante dans la communauté juive, au moins jusqu’au IIIe s. ap. J.‑C. Un examen attentif des particularités linguistiques propres à ces textes met en exergue des influences du latin sur le grec et du grec sur le latin. L’influence du grec semble toutefois plus accentuée. Le bilinguisme des Juifs de Rome a été réel, mais imparfait. À Venosa, en revanche, la situation est différente. La communauté juive est passée du grec au latin en environ deux siècles. Le grec y a été maintenu artificiellement dans un milieu devenu totalement latinophone.Rochette Bruno.
