The collect of archeological and epigraphic sources relating to the macella allows to study the geographical distribution of these public buildings, very little documented in the two Mauretania, their administrative role under the control of aediles who were responsibles for ponderaria, and their trade function which appeared to be less important compared with shops and fairs (nundinae).
