This article examines a series of interpretational difficulties relating to the indigenous peoples of ancient North Africa. In particular, these concern the definition of « civilisation » in relation to such people and the perspectives from which their cultural evolution has been judged (or prejudged) . Whilst Roman sources might describe one of them as a "tribu » or « natio », what do we understand to have been meant by those terms ? There has been a tendency in the past to assume the worst and to expect the least of such societies.
