Les pavements de l'abbatiale de Fontenelle à Maing

It was in April 1977, as a dumping area was being cleared for the dredging of the Scheldt, that the remnants of the Cistercian Abbey of Fontenelle, in Maing, near Valenciennes, were unexpectedly dug out. The 1977 archaeological works, carried out jointly by the teams of Saint-Amand, Denain and Valenciennes, with the support of the excavations board, permitted to bring out some abbatial structures, mostly those of the church, a plan of which could even be drawn. The inner division of the church, and especially that of the main nave, is confirmed by ruptures in the pattern of the pavement. The Fontennelle tilage, notably those belonging to type I, confirm the local use of « mosaics », still frequent in the XIIIth and XIVth centuries, even after the introduction of bicolour tiles. As regards dating, the use of types I and II in Fontennelle would lead us back to the end of the xmth century or the first half of the following one. One may assume they are manufactured in a local workshop.C'est en avril 1977, lors de l'aménagement d'un bassin de décharge pour le dragage de l'Escaut, que furent subitement exhumés les vestiges de l'abbaye cistercienne de Fontenelle, à Maing, près de Valenciennes. Les travaux archéologiques de 1977 commencés conjointement par les équipes de Saint-Amand, Denain et Valenciennes, avec l'appui du Service des fouilles, ont permis de dégager certaines structures abbatiales, principalement celles de l'église dont il fut possible de dresser un plan. La subdivision de l'église, et particulièrement celle du vaisseau central, est confirmée par les ruptures du décor apparaissant dans l'ordonnance des pavements. Les pavements de Fontenelle, notamment ceux du type I, confirment l'usage local des « mosaïques » dont l'utilisation aux XIIIe et XIVe siècles reste fréquente, même après l'introduction des carreaux bicolores. En ce qui concerne la datation, l'utilisation des types I et II à Fontenelle remonterait à la fin du XIIIe siècle ou à la première moitié du siècle suivant. L'on peut penser qu'ils furent fabriqués dans un atelier Valenciennois.In april 1977 werden tijdens de werken van de aanleg van een afwateringsbekken voor de uitbaggering van de Schelde onverwacht de resten blootgelegd van de cisterciënzer abdij van Fontennelle in Maing, bij Valenciennes. De archeologische werkzaamheden werden in 1977 aangevat door ploegen uit Saint-Amand, Denain en Valenciennes, met de steun van de archeologische dienst (Service des fouilles). Tijdens die campagne werden sommige structuren van de abdij blootgelgd, voornamelijk van de kerk en het was moge- lijk een plattegrond ervan op te stellen. De onderverdeling van de kerk en voornamelijk van het schip is weerspiegeld in de veranderingen van het decor van de vloer. De vloeren van Fontenelle en vooral die van het eerste type bevestigen het lokale gebruik van mozaïek, een techniek die in de xme en XIVe eeuw nog vaak gebruikt werd, zelfs na dein- voering van tweekleurige vloertegels. Voor wat nu de datering betreft, neemt men aan dat het gebruik van het eerste en tweede type in Fontenelle teruggaat tot het einde van de XIIIe eeuw of de eerste helft van de XIVe.
