The authors have searched for all the mediaeval remains still visible in the countryside of Auvergne. The conquest of the soil was almost completed in the course of the XIth, XIIth and XIIIth centuries : inhabitation reached then its furthermost limits under the shape of big villages in the open-land, of hamlets in medium mountain, and of temporary dwelling in the summer pasture-lands.
