Jean-Jacques Duthoy, The Town-Hall of Saint-Omer (1834). An instance of late Neo-Classicism. The building which can be seen nowadays on the "Grand-Place" of Saint-Omer has been erected to replace a group of buildings dating back to the Middle-Ages and which had to be demolished at the beginning of the XIXth century because of their state of utter disrepair. Two successive plans were discarded : that of G. Couture in 1786 and that of F. Verly in 1813. The present Town-Hall was erected between 1834 and 1840 by P.B. Lefranc, sometimes held to be the pupil of Percier and Fontaine, and who worked for the Orléans family (Pau, Dreux, Neuilly).
