La diffusion rurale de l'industrie cotonnière en France (1750-1850)

Serge Chassagne, "The rural diffusion of cotton industry in France (1750-1850)". Here are briefly underlined three questions touching the diffusion of cotton industry in the country. First of all, how did this new activity spread itself out in the course of the eighteenth century ? This question compels us to cast a new glance on the too widely accepted connection between industrial and urban developments, and draws the attention on certain trading manufacturers, ill-known and yet efficiently helped by the King's administration. Secondly, how did the mechanization of spinning affect the scattered system of work organization ? The technological improvements neither brought forth a brutal concentration of the production nor ruined the old system of scattered manufacturing. Lastly, who are those rural industry workers ? The example of the Mauges weavers, a region which is nowadays famous for its well-balanced development, provides us with elements of an anthropological survey which demands to be carried on in some other place.On aborde ici brièvement trois problèmes posés par la diffusion rurale de l'industrie cotonnière. En premier lieu, comment s'est diffusée cette activité nouvelle au XVIIIème siècle ? Ce qui amène à reconsidérer le schéma trop classique industrialisation/urbanisation, et attire l'attention sur certains marchands-fabricants, mal connus, mais efficacement aidés par l'administration monarchique. Ensuite, comment la mécanisation de la filature affecta-t-elle le système d'organisation dispersée du travail ? Le progrès technologique n'a pas entraîné de concentration brutale de la production, ni ruiné le vieux système de la manufacture dispersée. Enfin qui sont ces travailleurs ruraux de l'industrie ? L'exemple des tisserands des Mauges, une région aujourd'hui vantée pour son essor équilibré, fournit des éléments de réponse à une enquête anthropologique qui demande à être poursuivie ailleurs.Serge Chassagne, "De Franse katoenindustrie op het land van 1750 tot 1850". Daarbij moet men het klassieke schema industrialisatie/urbanisatie wat verlaten en de aandacht vestigen op sommige handelaars-ondernemers die door de koninklijke administrate werden geholpen. Welke invloed had de mechanisatie van de spinnerij op de versnipperde werkorganisatie van vroeger ? De vooruitgang heeft geen brutale concentratie veroorzaakt en ook het oude systeem laten bestaan. Wie waren deze landelijke textielar- beiders ? De we vers van de Maugesstreek, een streek die zich zeer harmonisch ontwikkeld heeft, geven een antwoord op een anthropologisch onderzoek dat elders moet voortgezet worden.Chassagne Serge.
