W.C.M. Meyers, The Flemish collaborators in France and their contacts with the Belgian Flemish- speaking circles. The territorial claims on French Flanders during World War II. Since the 1840's the Flemings of Belgium have constantly shown interest for French Flanders. A cultural interest, first and foremost, which found an echo in the action of the Comité Flamand de France. During World War I, the Flemish activists asked the Germans to incorporate the French Flanders to the Flemish State. After the War, the abbé Gantois created the Vlaamsch Verbond voor Frankrijk, which aimed at cultural ends but yielded more and more to Flemish nationalist influence. This influence brought him in 1940, once France occupied, to ask Hitler the incorporation or French Flanders to the United Netherlands. In the same manner the Leader of the Flemish nationalist movement demanded the unification of the Netherlands. Publications of Flemish nationalists, speeches by VNV leaders justified their claim by a common culture, but also on economical grounds, and by the need for a living-space. In 1942, however, the Germans forbade the use of the term of "United Netherlands" ; this idea did not fit in any longer with the German conceptions at the new Europe.Les Flamands de Belgique ont montré sans discontinuité depuis les années 1 840 un grand intérêt pour la Flandre française. Intérêt culturel avant tout, qui trouvera une réponse dans l'action du "Comité flamand de France". Pendant la Première Guerre mondiale, les activistes flamands demandent aux Allemands l'incorporation de la Flandre française dans l'Etat flamand. Après la guerre, l'abbé Gantois érige le Vlaamsch Verbond voor Frankrijk, d'inspiration culturelle, mais il subit de plus en plus les influences nationalistes flamandes. Ce qui l'amène en 1940, après l'occupation allemande, à demander à Hitler l'incorporation de la Flandre française dans les Pays-Bas réunis. De même, le Chef du mouvement nationaliste flamand demande l'unification des Pays-Bas. Plusieurs publications de nationalistes flamands, plusieurs discours de dirigeants VNV illustrent cette exigence par la culture commune, mais aussi par des besoins économiques, par la notion de l'espace vital. En 1942, toutefois, les Allemands interdisent la notion "Pays-Bas réunis" : cette idée n'entrait plus dans les concepts allemands sur l'Europe nouvelle.W.C.M. Sedert 1840 bestaat er in Belgisch Vlaanderen een grote en constante belangstelling voor Frans Vlaanderen. In de eerste plaats een culturele belangstelling waaraan de actie van het "Comité flamand de France" zal tegemoet komen. Tijdens W.O.I, is een van de eisen van de activisten bijj de Duitse overheid de inlijving van Frans-Vlaanderen in de Vlaamse staat. Na de oorlog richt pastoor Gantois het "Vlaamsch verbond voor Frankrijk" op, een culturele vereniging die steeds sterker onder de invloed van het Vlaamse nationalisme komt te staan, wat in 1940 tijdens de bezetting leidt tot de vraag aan Hitler Frans-Vlaanderen in de verenigde Nederlandse staat op te nemen. Net zoals de leider van het VNV de hereniging van de Nederlanden eist. Deze eis komt volgens de leiders van het VNV niet alleen voort uit de culturele banden maar ook uit de nood aan "Lebensraum", een eko- nomische imperatief dus. Maar in 1942 zien de Duitsers af van het projekt van de verenigde Nederlanden dat niet meer in hun plannen voor een nieuw Europa past.Meyers Willem C.M.
