An example of twelfth century Adaptatio : the Roman d'Eneas author's use of glossed Aeneid manuscripts

Analysis of dozens of glossed medieval Aeneid manuscripts and close comparison with its mid-twelfth century Norman French adaptation, the Roman d'Eneas, permits the conclusion that the anonymous romancer had access to such manuscripts and incorporated rather systematically parts of the commentary /annotation traditions into his work-glosses deriving from both Servius and other interpretations. Five specific cruces merit attention for the purposes of the present argument : the « Byrsa » gloss ; the « Auernus » gloss ; the « Golden Bough » gloss ; the « metus et dolor » gloss ; and the « quamquam uulneratus » gloss. Each representative « anomaly » at once deserves further probing and stands for another half dozen or so textual problems that warrant further study. Such algorithmic research seeks to elucidate the process of composition evident in this significant and fertile medieval re-interpretation of Virgil's Aeneid ; it also weds the study of vernacularization, romance narratives, and philology to a kind of anthropological semantics of myth.L'étude d'une centaine de manuscrits de l'Énéide portant des gloses médiévales, et une comparaison dans le détail de son adaptation française du XIIe siècle, le Roman d'Énéas, nous convainc que le romancier anonyme normand a sans doute utilisé de tels manuscrits pour son œuvre et y a incorporé les traditions de commentaires et de gloses dérivant de Servius et d'autres interprétations. Cinq problèmes spécifiques sont visés : la glose de « Byrsa » ; la glose d' « Auernus » ; la glose du « rameau d'or » ; la glose de « metus et dolor » ; et la glose de « quamquam uulneratus ». Chaque cas ou « anomalie » mérite une étude détaillée et représente à la fois plusieurs autres problèmes textuels. Une telle recherche algorithmique cherche à élucider le processus de composition évident dans cette ré-interprétation médiévale riche et significatice de l'Enéide de Virgile. Le résultat relie l'étude de la vernacularisation, des narrations romanesques et de la philologie à une sémantique anthropologique du mythe.Cormier Raymond J.
