The change in direction operated by Vatican II in the theology of the ministries obliges us to rethink the unity of the sacrament of order and the diversity of the three ordained ministries. New questions are raised on the sub- ject of the deaconate as participation in the sacramental fullness of the episcopacy and its sacramental configuration to Christ-the-Servant. This article explores thèse questions in the light of the theology of St. Thomas Aquinas concerning the sacramental character and its finality.
