Abstract. - Traditionally, islands are considered as cultural bridges but also as places of conflicts ; this is the case of Oceanian islands, where two processes are to be analysed : the impact of geographical, ethnical, demographical, economical and cultural imbalances and the inheritage of a complex historical evolution characterized in the part by the competition between catholics and protestants, French and English (during the XlXth and the early XXth centuries) and by the struggle between U.S.A. and Japon in World War II.
