La formation des cirques du massif du Piton des Neiges (La Réunion) (The formation of the volcanic cirques in the Reunion island)

Abstract. - The cirques of the Piton des Neiges volcano result from a complex history. The starting event was the formation, around 150 000 years ago, of a large summit caldeira. This one, formed in alkaline context, constitutes the originality of Piton des Neiges which, although linked with hawaiian type volcanoes, has reached a volcanological evolution stage unknown into the Hawaii islands volcanoes. Then, erosion has carried out a considerable work with caldeira outlets cutting and rims recoil. This extensive erosion was due to the aggressiveness of the climate, the steepness of the slopes and the weakness of the old material laying beneath the piles of the recent phases of activity lava flows. In fact, the major effect of erosion in the cirques carving process appears to have occured after the ultimate eruptions, that is to say within about twenty thousands years.Résumé. - Les cirques du Piton des Neiges résultent d'une histoire complexe. Le point de départ réside dans la formation, il y a 150 000 ans environ, d'une large caldeira sommitale. Celle-ci, créée en contexte alcalin, constitue l'originalité du Piton des Neiges qui, apparenté aux volcans hawaïens, a atteint un stade d'évolution volcanologique inconnu dans les volcans des îles Hawaii. L'érosion a ensuite accompli un travail considérable avec l'installation des exutoires de la caldeira et le recul de ses rebords. Son rôle a été facilité par l'agressivité du climat, la dénivellation et la présence de matériaux anciens très affouillables sous les empilements de coulées des phases récentes d'activité. La plus grande part du façonnement des cirques, par des processus érosifs, paraît s'être en fait effectuée après les dernières éruptions, soit en une vingtaine de milliers d'années.Kieffer Guy.
