Christian palimpsests from the Cairo Geniza

Starting from some time about a millenium ago and continuing for several centuries, the Jewish community of Cairo disposed of its worn-out literary texts by placing them in the Geniza. Due to the dry Egyptian climate, this large and ancient storehouse of manuscripts was preserved intact until its discovery towards the end of the last century when it was dispersed among many different libraries throughout the world. Of the Geniza manuscripts, the palimpsests are among the oldest. An attempt has been made here to gather and to list all this material and to evaluate the finds. A study of the palimpsests shows that the great majority of them are Christian and were probably written in Palestine in the sixth-seventh centuries C. E. Lost texts such as Origin's Hexapla and Aquila's Greek translation were probably available at the time as secondary writing material. Many of the texts preserve the earliest known examples of various Christian dialects, such as Christian Palestian Aramaic and Georgian. These languages are mainly represented here by Biblical texts, lives of saints, etc. The absence of classical texts in the underwriting may reflect to some extent the popular nature of the populace from which these manuscripts derive. From an attempt to reconstruct the original quires of the manuscripts, several interesting conclusions concerning the medieval codex in the East and its manufacturing process have emerged.Il y a environ mille ans la communauté juive du Caire se servait de la Guéniza pour déposer ses textes littéraires usés. Grâce au climat sec d'Egypte, cet ancien entrepôt est resté intact jusqu'à sa découverte à la fin du XIXe siècle. C'est à cette époque que les manuscrits ont été dispersés dans un grand nombre de bibliothèques à travers le monde entier. Les palimpsestes sont parmi les plus anciens manuscrits de la Guéniza. Dans cet article, nous avons tenté de répertorier et d'évaluer tout le matériel. La plupart des palimpsestes sont d'origine chrétienne et ont probablement été écrits au VIe ou au VIIe siècle après J.-C. Les textes disparus tels que les Hexaples d'Origène et la traduction grecque d'Aquila étaient, à cette époque, réutilisés pour la copie de nouveaux textes. Les premiers exemples des dialectes chrétiens tels que Paraméen, le chrétien palestinien et le géorgien figurent dans ces textes. Ce sont surtout des textes bibliques, des biographies de saints, etc. L'absence de textes classiques dans l'écriture sous-jacente est une preuve de l'origine populaire des lecteurs de ces manuscrits. De notre reconstruction des feuilles des manuscrits il a été possible de tirer un certain nombre de conclusions intéressantes à propos du codex médiéval dans l'Orient et de son procédé de fabrication.Sokoloff Michael, Yahalom Joseph.
