The French Judiciary and the Political Repression of « Vichy » : A Partial Success Story. The period of Vichy (1940-1944) reveals why and how a dictatorial regime uses justice and, inversely, how judges react in front of a government which involves them in upholding a partisan repression becoming more and more opposed to traditional judicial principles. The System of adaptation of French judges appears to be made of oppositions : adhesion and distance, zeal and reserve. Oppositions which take on different forms according to circumstances and people.
