The urban growth of Mulhouse has been fast : fewer than 8.000 inhabitants two centuries ago ; more than 100.000 at the beginning of the XXe century. At present the urban area boast 225.000 inhabitants. As a resuit, Mulhouse does not have the necessary potentiality (as a service center) to organize the urban area ; besides the urban landscape is anarchie. The town council has defined a policy to find a solution to those problems (« projet de ville ») that gave birth to a city planning sheme (« projet urbain »). It does not only aim at developing the city center but also at creating a polynuclear town.
