Istanbul : birth of a megapolis. — Istanbul, capital of two successive empires during sixteen centuries, gradually became, after 1950, a megapolis in developing country, following the rural exodus which produced a tenfold increase of the population in less than half a century. After a period of stagnation due to the transfer of the capital of the Turkish Republic to Ankara, the rural exodus lead to the formation of illegal built up areas at its margin. Pressure on peripheral land made successive master plans obsolete, and the built up area expanded along the coast and inland.
