Although completely dismantled at the end of the war, the Federal Republic of Germany is now considered an example and a leader ; its foreign trade can be viewed as a sign and a reason for this achievement. German post-war economic development can be divided into two periods : the monetary reform and the «economic miracle » period (1948-1968) and the international crisis period (1969-1979). An interest in trading abroad combined with the neces-sity to export in order to buy essential raw materials as well as a high quality labour force, the availability of assets for industrial investment and economic «know-how » are among the ingrédients of this success.
