Tax collection, rural patronage and the emergence of a peasant-base society. Southern Gaul towards the end of the Roman Empire. The overall objective of this work is to study the dependence relationships between the aristocracy, the peasantry and the state in fifth-and sixth-century southern Gaul. Current opinion in historiography claims that late antique peasantry should be seen as a class subject to considerable exploitation (either through taxes or through rent).
