Remarques sur les ergs du Sahara

Notes on the ergs of the Sahara. The large agglomerations of dunes vividly described as ergs are a characteristic of the Sahara. Their localisation can be explained by the hydrography of the wet periods and the accumulation of fluvial sand in the enclosed basins. Their topography is linked to the regime of the winds during an arid period — direction, frequency and above all strength —, but the effects of this differ according to the thickness of the layer of sand. On the southern edge of the desert, the « clothed » ergs, i.e. covered wiih vegetation, have more or less kept their original topography.Les grosses agglomérations de dunes vives appelées ergs sont caractéristiques du Sahara. Leur localisation s'explique par l'hydrographie des périodes humides et l'accumulation de sables fluviatiles dans des bassins fermés. Leur dispositif topographique est lié au régime des vents au cours d'une période aride — direction, fréquence et surtout force —, mais les effets de ceux-ci sont différents suivant l'épaisseur de la couverture sableuse. À la bordure méridionale du désert, des ergs « vêtus », c'est-à-dire recouverts de végétation, conservent des traces plus ou moins nettes du dispositif originel.Capot-Rey Robert.
