Notes on the ergs of the Sahara. The large agglomerations of dunes vividly described as ergs are a characteristic of the Sahara. Their localisation can be explained by the hydrography of the wet periods and the accumulation of fluvial sand in the enclosed basins. Their topography is linked to the regime of the winds during an arid period — direction, frequency and above all strength —, but the effects of this differ according to the thickness of the layer of sand.
