Echoing the article by B. Geyer and his team in this journal, here is an attempt to situate the “ Very Long Wall” of the Syrian steppe in its historical context, involving in particular the cuneiform sources. Three different text corpuses are mainly invoked : the palatial archives of Ebla, the documentation of the Ur III period and the royal archives of Mari. The chronological and historical context of this “ Very Long Wall” (Early Bronze IV-Middle Bronze Age II, between 2400 and 1600 BC) leads us to place its construction and its use in the broader context of the so-called “ Amorite question.” It is suggested here that its construction was initiated or encouraged by the proto-Syrian kingdom of Ebla (XXIVth century BCE), in the framework of...
