From fierce warrior to “most excellent of Hellenes”: the story of Aristomenes (revisited) by Pausanias. In Pausanias’s Messêniaka, the narrative construction of the life of the Messenian national hero Aristomenes is executed with particular diligence. Actually, the author does not content himself with a summary or compilation of different sources, for he organizes them with the clearly perceptible desire to contribute a unique page to the book of Greek history. Pausanias takes care to let his readers know about his reasons to make his selections from two very different authors, Rhianos and Myron.
