The incidence of ischemic stroke has been rising in the younger population in recent decades. The causative mechanism remains unknown in up to half of these patients. It has been speculated that most of these cryptogenic strokes are thromboembolic and some might originate from the heart. Left atrial (LA) volume, structure, and function provide relevant clinical information in cardiovascular disease. Hence accurate approximation of true LA volume by imaging in multiple phases of the cardiac cycle is essential for utilizing this information in clinical decision-making and research.
