After briefly describing certain aspects of the ethics debate over the last twenty-five years, the author deals with the notion of bioethics in Germany, using the question of cloning as an example. The memory of their own history clearly has anb effect of the German bioethics debate, especially as regards the themes which are debated (eugenics, euthanasia, and experiments on those unable to give their consent) ; but Germany's "uniqueness" is not so pronounced as some lead us to believe. A considerable number of organizations and institutions have become involved in this debate.
