About 1250, after he was discharged from prison in Acre, Joinville, the crusader and biographer of Saint Louis, wrote a commentary on the Symbol of the Apostles, that he got illustrated. Written in medieval French, it was destined to comfort his companions of misfortune. The authors present the three documents (Paris, BNF, New acq. fr. 4909, and lat. 11907 ; missal of Saint-Nicaise of Reims, Saint-Petersburg) that have been preserved and which are all taken from the collection of illustrations of the manuscript that is lost by now. They analyse how the Church and the sacraments are represented.
