In the transportation industry, honeycomb core sandwich panels are often used for structural parts because of their ability to provide a high level of specific performance. They can have curved shapes and can be exposed to impacts or crashes. The honeycomb core is then exposed to combined out-of-plane compression-shear stresses due to the angle of the impact and the curvature of the panel. Its collapse during crushing is thus driven by the coupling of unstable compressive behavior and out-of-plane shear mechanical responses, which arise from the highly oriented nature of the honeycomb structure.
