Hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of aqueous interfaces plays an essential role on interfacial physico-chemical properties, with applications ranging from ion adsorptions, electrocatalysis to protein folding. We have developed a metric for quantifying the microscopic hydrophobicity/ hydrophilicity by combining DFT-MD simulations and both experimental and theoretical SFG spectroscopy, that for the first time built the connections between structural descriptors and spectroscopic quantities. This new metric has been applied to SAMs/water interfaces, also revealing the role of nano-scale and nano-seconds scales of hydrophpobic patches at the surface of PEGs.
