Assessing Occupational Burnout in Resident Counselors

It was the hope of this study to accomplish one main objective. That objective was to determine how prevalent occupational burnout is among residential counselors of juvenile delinquents and to see if these levels of burnout could be contributed to staff demographics. Occupational burnout was measured by the MBI (Maslach Burnout Inventory), a self-report questionnaire measuring emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and persona] accomplishment (Mas1ach, 1981). It was found that nearly three-fifths of the counselors who participated in this study had high to moderate levels of burnout. Males were compared against females, Protestants were also compared against Catholics and likewise was the same for married persons being compared against single persons on all three sub-scales and each sub-scales\u27 intensity scores. A mean split was used in order to compare the remaining demographics aspects of age, height, weight, and years experience against all three sub-scales and their respective intensity scores. No significant differences were found in any of the comparisons
