Pollen analysis of the Saint-Ursin peat bog (Mayenne, Massif armoricain, Northwest France) : detection of late glacial and Holocene sequences.

Paleoenvironmental studies conducted to date in western France have provided only rare and brief sequences dating to the Late Glacial period. However, pollen analysis and radiocarbon dating of a peat bog in Mayenne (Massif Armorican) revealed a continuous and well-developed Late Glacial episode. The pollen diagram shows an Allerad unlike that of other French sites (Massif Central, Paris Basin, etc.) in which the usual Pinus phase has been replaced by a Betula phase. This sequence, possibly due to special climatic conditions, is typical of certain sites in Great Britain. Thus, the Bolling-Allerad interstadial during the Armorican Late Glacial period is similar to the Late Devensian Late Glacial episode in the British Isles. The much more conventional Holocene record showed a sediment hiatus throughout most of the Atlantic period, all of the Sub-Boreal and the beginning of the Sub-Atlantic. Peat digging at the beginning of the Middle Ages probably accounts for this disturbance of sediments.Les études paléoenvironnementales menées jusqu'à présent dans l'Ouest de la France, plus précisément dans le Massif Armoricain, n'ont fourni que de rares et brèves séquences d'âge tardiglaciaire. La réalisation de l'analyse palynologique d'une tourbière de Mayenne (Massif Armoricain, France), assortie de datations radiocarbone met en évidence un épisode tardiglaciaire continu et relativement développé. Le diagramme obtenu livre un Allerod différent des autres sites français (Massif Central, Bassin Parisien...) puisque la phase à Pinus, habituellement rencontrée, est ici inexistante et remplacée par une phase à Betula. Cet événement probablement dû à des conditions climatiques particulières se retrouve dans de nombreux sites de Grande-Bretagne. Ainsi, l'interstade Boiling - Allerad du Tardiglaciaire armoricain s'avère comparable au "Late Devensian Lateglacial" des Iles Britanniques. L'enregistrement Holocène, beaucoup plus présente un hiatus de sédimentation occultant une grande partie de l'Atlantique, la totalité du Subboréal et le début du Subatlantique. Une action anthropique au début du Moyen Age, tel qu'un tourbage de la cuvette, semble à l'origine de ce phénomène.Barbier Delphine, Visset Lionel.
