The effectiveness of micro Raman spectroscopy in identifying the pigments used in old mural paintings was tested on a micro sample, taken from a post Byzantine mural painting of Saint Charalambos church in Athens - Greece. The sample was embedded in polyesteric resin and the obtained cross-section, after polishing, was observed under optical microscope using quartz halogen and UV light sources. The cross-section was extensively analyzed by micro Raman spectroscopy and, for comparison purposes, by micro probe electron microscopy.
