This study evolved from an investigation of data relating to the origins of oléiculture in southern France. The data was derived from three sources ancient documentary evidence ; artifacts (lithics and pottery) ; paleobotanical material recovered (carbonized seeds and burnt wood) from various excavated sites ; and off-site pollen analysis. Analysis of the combined data suggests that, although the oleaster was clearly present in the vegetation of southern France in antiquity, the chronological discordance appearing on the pollen diagrams from different sectors indicate that the origin of the olive at least from the Roman period, is to be found in the history of agriculture and not vegetation.
