The present day physical condition of mediaeval window glass varies enormously, the durability of glass being sensitive to both its chemical composition and the environment to which it has been exposed. About 250 specimens of glass, principally from the windows of York Minster and ranging in date from the 12th to 15th centuries, were subjected to quantitative x-ray fluorescence analysis and the results have been correlated to the weathering characteristics of the glass. Multivariate analysis of the data reveals that several groups of glasses can be identified chemically, and that certain constituent oxides determine the manner in which the glass decays.
