In this article, the interwar emergence of Catholic mysticism is explained in spatial terms. Following the example of two converted avant-garde artists, the German literator Hugo Ball and the Belgian writer Michel Seuphor, the first an initiator of Dada and the second a pioneer in the field of abstract art, this article lays out the imagined (spatial) trajectory alongside which both men tried to experience and to evoke mystic feelings. In order to do so, the ‘ modernity’ of Ball’s and Seuphor’s religious conversions, which went hand in hand with the building of a new type of life in a remote village, is analysed.
