Space and Mystic Contemplation. On the Self-Fashioning of Converted Avant-Gardists

In this article, the interwar emergence of Catholic mysticism is explained in spatial terms. Following the example of two converted avant-garde artists, the German literator Hugo Ball and the Belgian writer Michel Seuphor, the first an initiator of Dada and the second a pioneer in the field of abstract art, this article lays out the imagined (spatial) trajectory alongside which both men tried to experience and to evoke mystic feelings. In order to do so, the ‘ modernity’ of Ball’s and Seuphor’s religious conversions, which went hand in hand with the building of a new type of life in a remote village, is analysed. By doing that, this article shows that a creative reinterpreting of traditional Catholic mystical writing could constitute a spiritual journey in a rapidly changing world.Rajesh Heynickx, Espace et contemplation mystique. Door het bestuderen van het leven en werk van twee tot het katholicisme bekeerde avant-gardisten, de Duitse schrijver en gangmaker van het dadaisme Hugo Ball en de Belgische schrijver Michel Seuphor, een pionier in het domein van de abstracte kunst, wordt de ruimtelijke verbeelding waarop mystieke ervaringen konden steunen onderzocht. Meer concreet wordt het religieuze leven dat beide figuren uitbouwden in een afgelegen dorp onder de loep genomen. Daarmee wordt in dit artikel aangetoond dat een creatieve herinterpretatie van oude mystieke bronnen letterlijk en figuurlijk een spiritueel pad kon opleveren in een snel veranderende wereld.Heynickx Rajesh.
