Even though religion and literature have been clearly demarcated social domains since the nineteenth century, the references to religion remain ubiquitous in the literary discourse of the first half of the 20th century. In this article, I focus on a number of representations of Catholic mysticism in Flanders during the interwar period. Firstly, I analyse the way in which the avant-garde poet Paul van Ostaijen refers to mysticism in order to substantiate his views on poetry. Secondly, I turn to four examples of prose fiction, written by Karel van den Oever, Gerard Walschap, Stijn Streuvels and Felix Timmermans, in which mystic discourse plays a part.
