This article reviews the campaigns on scientific research on Sea Turtles, and particularly the Dermochelys coriacea Leatherback, conducted in French Guiana from 1977 to 1996. It reports on research dealing with the delimitation of nesting beaches, the effect of the incubation temperature of eggs on sexual differentiation, artificial incubation in hatcheries, the natural sex ratio of hatchlings, prédation on newborns, postnatal growth, migrations and tourist impact. The demographic studies are described in another paper in this special issue. The nesting beaches of Basse Mana are the largest in the world for Leatherbacks, with the highest concentration of females on Hattes (or Yalimapo) beach.
