Unlike a common notion today, fallow is not a new phenomenon nor has it always loathed. Using diverse manuscript, cartographic and toponimic sources, history shows that fallow was a common and useful vegetation for the rural populations of openfields in the Paris Basin. Since the 1990s, fallow and wastelands - assimilated without remorse - have come to be considered an agronomic and economic disaster as well as an eyesore. How can we explain such a sharp reversal of opinion in the space of a few decades ? Today's fallow is clearly not the same that in the past.
