From the second half of the fourth century before Christ, the Athenians used the dokimasia (or « scrutiny ») of new citizens. A foreigner whose citizenship had been conferred by decree of the Athenian Assembly, had to be presented at the Popular (or « Heliastic ») Court. The dokimasia took the form of an ordinary trial. The Court had to determine by a vote if the privilege of citizenship was rightly conceded. Documents, essentially inscriptions, show that, during the second half of the third century before Christ, some other Greek cities used a similar practice, but with a different perspective : using the dokimasia, they wanted that citizenship was granted to a large number of people, but also that the conferment of citizenship on alien ne...
