The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate that Theocritus has taken his inspiration from Plato’s Symposium to compose his Idyll 7. The situations, the songs and the characters appearing in this poem are modelled on situations, discourses and characters of Plato’s dialogue. Theocritus has metamorphosed this dialogue into a poem in his own style.
