Abstract. - The industrialization of the Alps at the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries should have spread « regressively » so to speak, from the lower parts of the valleys to the upper parts which are less privileged as to space, communications and markets. Except in the cross-valley of the Arve, things have worked out differently from what could have been logically expected ; from the fields of white coal located in the inner areas of the mountain range and worked on the spot through electro-chemistry and electro-metallurgy, the movement has reached the cities of the outer Alps such as Grenoble.
